Ennie is an unmarried mother of five and bemoans the fact that she had dropped out of school and made nothing of her life. She understands the value of holding on to a job when she finds one and the same may be said of her relationship with the elusive Jacob. We never see Jacob, who is always either working or drinking. Day-to-day, Ennie looks after Jacob’s aging father who once wanted Ennie for himself, but was rejected by her. Jacob’s relatives would like the pair to marry and Ennie’s family would like her to be supported too. An earnest observation of domestic life in a rural environment.
